The video links below are from wonderful creators on YouTube that offer these tutorials for free to the public. Please make sure to give their videos a thumbs up and/or subscribe to their channels on YouTube if you appreciate their work!  YouTube is a great resource and I often just search for videos there when I'm trying to learn a new knitting stitch or skill.  I encourage you to do the same!

When first learning to knit, I'd suggest that you start by knitting a square (also known as a swatch) to practice the basics using the steps and videos below.

1. Make a slip knot

2. Cast on 16 stitches using the Long Tail Cast on or the Easy Cast On (also known as the Backwards Loop Cast On)

3. Knit 4 rows

4. Purl 4 rows

5. Do a row of 2x2 ribbing - Repeat Knit 2 stitches then Purl 2 stitches until the end of the row (also known as k2, p2)

6. Do a second row of 2x2 ribbing - Repeat  Purl 2 stitches then Knit 2 stitches until the end of the row (also known as (p2, k2)

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 two more times (alternating knit and purl every 2 stitches like this is how you can make 2x2 ribbing - great for a sweater hem, sleeve hem, or hat brim)

8. Knit 2 rows

9. Cast off

Once you've got the basics down, you're ready to jump into knitting your first pattern!   There are lots of places you can find knitting patterns online for free or to purchase.  Here are just a couple of sources to check out for patterns:
